After a hiatus from blogging Experiential Adventures is back. This spring was extremely busy as we travelled to Alaska, North Carolina, California, and Colorad
o. We also had the opportunity to facilitate several programs in Idaho starting with the Idaho Counseling
The Idaho Counseling Association (ICA) is an umbrella organization that represents the collective work of five divisions. With a simple mission focused on enhancing human development throughout the life span, the association also works to promote the counseling and human development profession as a whole. Within ICA are the following five divisions:
- IACES – Idaho Association for Counselor Education and Supervision
- IDAMFC – Idaho Association of Marriage and Family Counselors
- IMHCA – Idaho Mental Health Counselors Association
- ISCA- Idaho School Counselor Association
- ICDA-Idaho Career Development Association
Throughout the evening the counselors worked in teams to complete tasks and initiatives focussed on understanding their individual and organizational collaboration propensities. Through discussion and activities, it became readily apparent to all that while each division has a professional area of focus, there are more similarities than differences.
While each division specializes in a specific discipline, their collective influence is important because they collaborate on public policies and legislation, best practices, the promotion of self-care and the care of others, mentorship and training, and accurate public education on mental and behavioral health issues.
Leadership requires a willingness to take risks, a readiness to take stands, and a responsibility to act on vital issues. Like many associations, the ICA has the challenging task of balancing the ideas and values of the various divisions, supporting their autonomy while unifying the association as a whole.
During the capstone activity, the division representatives collaborated on the creation and assembly of a visual portrait representing each division within the ICA. This activity emphasized how the interdependence among individual counselors and divisional representatives is essential to furthering the relevance and service of the association.
The positive influence that the counseling profession has on society is immeasurable, and our experience with this committed group was amazing! Many thanks to the ICA for all of their work and for the impacts they have on the lives of others!
